I ended a long relationship with an old friend 6 or 8 months ago. Last night he asked me to attend his birthday party next week. I said I'd be there, but I really would rather not go. I'm an adult, and I know I should be able to able to tell him I'm not coming without guilt. Somebody help me out.

I would be completely honest because then he could never accuse you of lying. Tell him how you really feel and why you don't think it's appropriate for you to attend. I know it sucks trying to muster up the courage and strength to tell someone exactly how you feel but I think you'll feel a lot better after and will be able to move on.

Personally, I don't understand if you ended a long relationship with an old friend, what you were doing speaking with him. That however is not the problem. The way I see it, is that you are an adult, act like one! Instead of trying to find an excuse for getting out of going to his birthday party, go. You never agreed to how long you would spend there. If you drop in, stay for a 1/2 hour and then say your goodbyes with an explanation that you have another engagement. This way, you are being an adult and keeping good on your word. In the future, be more honest with yourself and him.

Since you ARE an adult, just tell him maybe it wouldn't be right for you to go since you guys aren't really friends anymore.

Tell him that you don't think you would feel comfortable attending and leave it at that. You don't need an excuse.
