What's the best way to get a patent?

Step 1) Dont disclose your invention to anyone unless you have a confidentiality agreement in place. Although disclosing your invention will not necessarily kill your patent in the US, it will do so in many other countries.

Step 2) Talk to a patent attorney, who will be able to advise you on how to protect your invention, and who will be able to draft, file, and prosecute to grant a patent application for your invention. They will also be able to arrange for protection in other countries if necessary. Although hiring the services of a patent attorney is expensive, a patent is a legal document, and an amateur application is likely to (a) have problems getting granted, (b) provide much weaker legal protection, and (c) be much more easily revoked by third parties.

Step 3) When you have safely filed a patent application, you can then start talking to other people about what to do with your invention without fear of your ideas being stolen.

Getting a patent is expensive, but if you are serious about your invention then potentially worth every penny.

Good luck!
