About 40 percent of smokers are trying to limit their cigarette consumption after the tobacco tax was raised on July 1 for the first time in three years, according to a joint survey by The Yomiuri Shimbun and NTT Resonant Inc.
According to an Internet survey conducted July 28-29, to which 1,076 people responded, one in four said they smoked: 23 percent of the respondents said they smoked every day, and 3 percent said they smoked occasionally.
On July 1, the tobacco tax was raised 1 yen per cigarette, and the price of a packet of 20 cigarettes was in turn raised by 20 yen to 30 yen. The survey showed many smokers strongly opposed the price hike.
About half of the smokers, who comprised about 30 percent of the respondents, said they thought the price rise was too drastic.

About 320 yen per pack. No sin tax here because the government owns Japan Tobacco which makes most cigarettes in Japan.

300 yen for my smokes (Mild Seven 8 lights) I buy by the carton so 3000 Yen for a carton. I buy them at Mom and Pop type store and they give you a free lighter or a free pack of Trash Bags (yes I said trash bags) with every Carton Purchased. Use to smoke Marlboro lights in the states but I like the Mild sevens better.
Cyn I know you can't answer the same question twice. But where do you live that the turn off the Ciggie machines at 11 they only turn off the Beer vendies in my area.

There are some really nasty brands like Bat and Hope that cost about 250 yen a pack. If you want a mainstream Japanese cigarette like Mild Sevens, or Seven Stars it's about 400 yen a pack. Marlboros or native American brands cost about 500 yen.

Anywhere from 380-500 Yen. That's about $3.50-$5.00 for a pack of Marlboro Lights.
