Many students in my classes when in middle school did things like "Which laundry detergent works best?" Put ketchup, mustard, spaghetti sauce, grass stains, etc. on pieces of clothing, let it set for an hour or so then wash with different detergents.
Make sure to use more than one piece of clothing (one piece of clothing per detergent). Put the same exact stains (foods) on each item. And make sure each piece of clothing is exactly the same (3 white shirts, 3 pairs of pants, etc.) Wash the clothing separately and report your findings. Make sure to have a hypothesis (your guess on which detergent works best) before you do the experiment.
This is an easy experiment and you can get the little boxes of different detergents for about 50 cents each from a coin laundromat.
Of course, this is for a science fair project not activities to do in class. The other answers seem good for in-class activities.
