I sealed the grout when the floor was laid 12 years ago and have never done it again since.

It depends on the type of sealer and what kinds of chemicals you clean the floor with. If your grout isn't absorbing dirt and water, then you must be doing something right. If you want another 12 years, then you can clean it thoroughly, rinse, and wipe on/wipe off some sealer. It's really easy -- I just did this last week in a new bathroom. Put it on with a sponge, wait 5-10 minutes, wipe off with a rag.

For a rule of thumb, I was told every 2-3 years.

oh yeah your do for a reseal,sounds like it held up good do it again now, but i would recommend every three years.
