That's what I was looking for: A broken extremity.. I was under the impression I'd be given something (in my eyes "bootlegged") such as Percocet or even Vics - which I don't like.

(I opted to eat the gel from the Morphine patches. Morphine drips in the hospital don't work too great either unless there's a big amount given. The thing that is not understood is that I have a HIGH tolerance to meds and a well.. I wouldn't say low, but not a good tolerance to pain. Therefore I'm given Vics/Percs (AP/AP) and they don't do a thing! I don't think the doctors believe me? Then again it depends on which doctor.. Also I've never had bad reaction on any of these meds Perc/Vic/Morphine/Oxys so I'm sorry you were unfortunante to have your husband react differently)

When I broke my leg & ankle, I was given Oxycontin and Oxycodone to help ease the pain. I was prescribed to alternate between the two, with the Oxycodone being able to take more frequently.

It was for severe pain and is habit forming, as the more you take the higher the does you will need to respond to the pain. It is the same for most narcotics. Some narcotics like vicodin and others are a narcotic mixed with tylenol to create a lesser dose of the narcotic and balance it out.

At times I did enjoy it and other times it made me so zonked out that I spoke and heard things that weren't there. The only good thing was it knocked out the pain and made watching hours of Animal Planet seem exciting!

Below is more detailed information from Walgreens.com

Oxycontin -

Ingredient Name: OXYCODONE (ox-i-KOE-done)

Drug Manufacturer: PURDUE PHARMA

Common Uses: This medicine is a narcotic analgesic used to treat or prevent moderate to severe pain. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before Using This Medicine: WARNING: Oxycodone is a narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine. It can be abused just as morphine can be abused. Sharing or misusing this drug is against the law. Oxycodone is indicated for the treatment of moderate or severe chronic pain. It is used on a regular basis, not just as needed. The 80 and 160 mg tablets are reserved for those who are now taking moderate to large amounts of a potent narcotic (such as morphine). Use of these high strength tablets by someone who is not regularly taking narcotic medication can cause serious side effects (such as slowed breathing) which can be fatal. Swallow tablets whole. Tablets which are crushed or chewed can release dangerous amounts of oxycodone into your bloodstream. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking sodium oxybate. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you take cimetidine, naltrexone, pentazocine, certain medicines for sleep (such as zolpidem or temazepam), certain medicines for mental or mood problems (such as chlorpromazine), certain medicines for nausea and vomiting (such as metoclopramide), or monoamine oxidase inhibitors, (such as furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, or tranylcypromine). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including trouble breathing or lung problems, recent head injury or growths on the brain, liver disease, kidney disease, Addison's disease, seizures, mental or mood disorder, history of alcohol or other substance abuse, asthma, bowel problems, certain blood problems (such as porphyria), stomach problems (such as paralytic ileus), pancreas problems, high blood pressure, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of severe or persistent diarrhea (such as pseudomembranous colitis), severe asthma or severe breathing problems. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Oxycontin is supposed to be prescribed for SEVERE Pain where other pain medications have had little effect in lessening pain.Cancer is what it is prescribed for the most for the pain is severe and to the point of unbearable, severe nerve pain as in spinal disk fusion where also other medications failed and so on. Oxycontin is highly addictive and why it is used for severe pain and only when less addictive pain medications have failed to bring relief. It in general is not used for after surgery for other meds will do well in handling the pain.Since it is highly addictive doesn't';t take long to be addicted and I would not want to go through the withdrawals. Keep in mind to take it without a prescription is illegal and punishable jail or juvenile for is a federal offense-will leave person with a permanent criminal record.Even doctors who prescribe it too casually can get into legal trouble. If you do not have a condition to account for taking it you can put yourself at risk of stroke, heart attack and seizure for is a Narcotic.

hello,
Bad news, I hate it. It was given to my husband for pain in his neck from a disc that ruptured in the end. Oxy caused him to become violent. I feared for myself and my children. However, my father takes oxy and has no such reaction. It all depends on your body chemistry. If you have family and are perscribed, listen to them if your mood changes. They or you will notice within a month of use. I hope you will be the lucky one and not have a bad reaction. My father has fibrmyalsia severe, parkinsons, arthritis. Oxy is a pain reliever. Ask for the morphine patches- pink and white box but don't recall name. Both my father and husband use(used) and worked.
Be careful
Best of luck
God bless

I take oxy and find that my life is far more enjoyable when taking it. It relieves the pain and l can either take it or not l have been on it or 8 years and only use it when the pain is so bad l would rather be in another place. You will only become addictive to it if you would become addictive to aspirin. Do not make out that medicine such as oxy is bad, it s the people who miss use the medicine that are bad, as are the tommy to goods who say to only use natural remedies to fix the problem.

prescribed only for servere injuries with plenty of pain, not given over extended periods of time because its extremly addicting and you can become dependant

if you break your arm, leg, or other bone or related severe injuries like that they will give you that or a related drug (morphine)
