On your calculator, enter 2 divided by 5. That will give you your answer.
For 100,000 in exponential notation, it is 1 times 10 to the number of zeros in 100,000.
For the decimal, you do the same, except it is 10 to the negative number of zeros.

divide 2 by 5, that's your decimal (.40). 100,000 = 1x10 to the fifth power (1 x 10^5) and .00001 = 1x10 to the negative 5th power (1 x 10^-5) Count how many places you have to move the decimal from 1, in 100,000 you would move the decimal to the right five times from the one. In .00001, you would move the decimal to the left five times from the 1. You can also call them 10^4 and 10^-6 - depends on what your teacher wants.

munipulate the denominator to multiples of 10, e.g 10, 100 etc.. den fro e.g 2/5 = 4/10. so your entire decimal contains 1 decimal place (becuz only got 1 zero.). so it'll be 0.4 if its two decimal place, e.g 25/100. den it'll be 0.25. and so on..

for converting 100,000 and 0.00001 into exponential notation, count the number of zeros in the number. in this case, let the number be n. for e.g, 100,000, n=5, while 0.00001, n=-5. if number is less than 1, put the negative sign, as shown above. so the form will be 1 * 10 ^ n, where n is the number you have counted earlier on.

The calculator will give the answer but you will not know anything. It is a shame to see students use calculators to multiply by 10. Yes 10!

Take out pen and paper and work:

5)2.0(.4
- 2 0
____
0 0
