The term "squatters rights" is slang for several things, most generally the legal doctrine of Adverse Possession.

The period required under adverse possession varies by state, and is usually anywhere between 5 and 20 years. However, there's more to it than just waiting out the time.

You have to be visually living on a premises with no knowledge from the owner for up to twenty years (its twenty for sure in California other states im not positive not all states practise that law) also the taxes must be current or the government will seize the property if they arent paid I learned this from that John Becks tv order get rich thing a few years back p.s. i never got rich but it did have some good information
