I am supposed to do a critical analysis of 3 poems written by Emily Dickinosn... My options are "I felt a funeral in my Brain, The Brain is Wider than the Sky, Because I could not stop for Death, Much Madness is Divinest Sense, Tell all Truth But Tell it Slant, and Theres a slant of light"
I am having trouble getting started and need some help. I dont know what to write. Each time I start... I draw blanks.
Any advise or help is appreciated!

This is one possible approach: look for similar themes and elements in the poems, and pick the three that have the most in common. Analyze each poem separately, then compare them to each other.

Ask yourself questions like: How do these particular poems reflect Dickinson's views on life and the world? What symbols or themes does she use? Is there exaggeration or emphasis on certain elements? Does she use irony, and if so, what affect does it have on the reader?

Put the poems in chronological order, and see if/how her views may have changed over time. Can you tie the poems in to some specific event in her life or a world happening at that time?

That ought to get you started, and hopefully, you'll come up with a main theme for your analysis. Good luck with everything!

Take a look at these websites to get some ideas. Then read the poems over and make the link in your own mind and put it in your own words for the analysis. That is part of training yourself to think through future assignments.

For us to interpret a poem for you, could put you in a really bad spot when/if you need to explain your reasoning in the classroom. School is where people learn to think, analyse and be creative.

I read once that all of her poems can be sung to the tune of “The Yellow Rose of Texas.” Now whenever I read her…that damn tune fills my head! I hope I don’t pass this unfortunate curse on to anyone else…

I'm really getting tired of seeing you people who need help with their homework. Couldn't you at least be clever and disguise your question as something else so we might be inclined to really help you? If you hate poetry so much, why are you taking the class? There are other ways to fulfill your liberal arts requirement. Besides, you are what's wrong with this world. a bunch of non-thinkers. You're required to take these types of classes to make you think. Not to make us think for you. That doesn't help anybody.
