What qualities do you look for in them to know that they are a good assistant? What do they do that makes you think they are a good person? I just want to know because i'm one and i want to be a good one.

I am a teacher. I look for someone who has her pulse on the classroom and is observant of what the children are doing and can step in and assist a child who may be in need without me having to prompt her all the time. I need someone who is low maintenance without being pushy. I really look for someone who likes the students and really wants to help and knows her stuff.

Are they self sufficient. When I hand them work to be done do they complete the work on their own or do they ask 1000 questions. Also, a nice ability to have is to know the campus. If I need you to go to the 7th grade office I would hope that you either already know or can find your way using a map. Lastly, simple office tasks are a plus. If you can file papers, and if you can easily learn how to use the photocopy machine (after being shown how to use it) then you're my pick for student assistant. My school has a "boot camp" for S.A.'s during which they have to complete certain tasks before graduating...

It depends on what your activities as a TA are.
If you grade assignments, you should always hand them back to the professor in time.
If you teach lab or problem solving classes, you should be prepared to answer questions.
The best thing is to ask the professor you are working with what he or she expects from their TA.
