1) Show up at office hours, but not just to "say hello," or to ask questions that can be easily answered by doing the reading for the class. Come to office hours prepared, with higher-order questions about the material you're studying. Show INFORMED interest in the subject. Ask for additional materials on the topic, if you're really interested. Over a period of years, you'll get to know various professors, and they'll get to know you AND your work. So make sure you put every effort into doing ABOVE average work. (A letter of recommendation that says you're average will get you nowhere.)

2) When it comes time to ask for letters, do this:
- ask each professor if s/he would be willing and able to write you a GOOD letter.
- if s/he says yes, ask to make an appointment, to which you will bring
--- a list of courses you took from that professor
--- graded papers from those courses (you have saved them, haven't you?)
--- a resume
--- a short statement indicating what the letter is for, and why you want the job/ want to go to grad school, or whatever.

If you do all this, you'll get GREAT letters. Best wishes to you!

GO TO THEIR OFFICE HOURS. All the colleges and universities I've been connected with require the professors to have office hours. Most of the time, nobody comes. professors generally like to talk to students, so go to them to ask them any kind of advice. make sure they know what kind of work you're doing. Talk to them after class also. Some professors may not be responsive, but many will. And it probably has nothing to do with grades. it has to do with your gumption. Make the effort and it will pay off!

work harder, improve your grade. go to office hours and show real dedication to your studies. don't kid yourself though: if your performance in class was / is average, the recommendation letter (if any) will be average as well! good luck

The best way, as mentioned, is office hours. If you get into reading their research and ask them for assistant position they'll love you forever.
