English comedy is based upon irony and innuendo, whilst American comedy appears to be sarcastic one liners and the art of putting people down. Is this a fair assesment?

A very fair assessment. American comedy always has to have a "message" (usually tending toward the liberal) and be politically correct. English comedy on the other hand has absolutely no sacred cows...milk 'em all! I got hooked on British humor ala Monty Python. It really redirected my taste in humor. Thank you England!

I am not an expert, but I think maybe you have to be "of that certain Nationality" to understand. There are plenty of American "so-called" comedies that are truly embarrassing, and some that are really funny as long as you understand what they are getting at. In America, on the PBS stations mostly, British comedy is shown and I have never really had a hard time "getting it". The shows are older..."Are You Being Served?", "Keeping Up Appearances", "Vicar of Dibbley", etc...but I still think they are quite funny.

Your right on in your assessment of english (irony)/american(put down)comedy as I have always loved english comedy but after watching an american conedy on channel 9 last night at 9.30pm I think america is going to give us some great comedy in the next few years.
The program was called 9/11, it started off abit slow but after the first 5 minutes I couldn't stop laughing at their slapstick comedy that reminded me of abbott & costello from years ago.
I cant wait to see part 2 later this years, they say that it will bring the house down.

I've tried to appreciate British comedy, but I've never been able to "get it." That doesn't mean I think Amer comedy is better, just personal preference. I think a lot of humor comes from events that are happening in society, so maybe where you live is a factor in the type of humor that you prefer.

Yup. I'd say that's generally accurate. I'm an American & I prefer Britcoms to ours. (though our old ones from the 70s & 80s tended to be hilarious!)

I liked Little Britain, Are You Being Served, Goodies, Blackadder, etc (though never really got into Python. Had it's moments, but too absurd to me.)

Current US sitcoms just don't make me laugh. They tend to beat a joke to death. The British know when to end it.

I agree with you, American comedy is so forced its like they have to explain everything and keep it simple to be funny, and also they seem to talk very loudly almost shouting? whats with that?I do like some American comedy but not very much of it, give me English any day.

British comedy, for the most part, is unfunny. Monty Python was great, that's about it. American comedy is much more sophisticated and clever. Why do you think John Cleese did "Will and Grace," and Eric Idle shows up on American comdies all the time? If THEY think something is good, then it is good.

Love, Jack.

American comedy is more character and situation driven. British comedy is more culturally driven.
