Hi there...

Remember that we're talking about China here. For much of the the last few thousand years, China has brought forth some of humanity's most advanced and powerful civilizations.

Here's an example - have you ever heard of the Chinese "Treasure Fleets?"

Check out link # 1. below. In the 15th Century, China made hundreds of ocean-going sailing ships - many of which were *three to five times* the size of any comparable European vessel. See the comparison drawing at this site. Sobering.

China was so damn powerful, it sent out a succession of these "Treasure Fleets" - mostly as an exercise in national pride. Unlike Europe, they didn't go abroad to discover and to settle. They eventually got tired of how much this exercise was costing them, and scrapped all those magnificent ships - and outlawed building new ones like them.

(Sound familiar, anyone? We had, what, five fully flight-certified Saturn V boosters at the end of Apollo - and the ones we didn't scrap, we turned into the world's largest lawn ornaments. But no, surely I am mistaken that there could ever be a similarity here... sigh.)

Anyway. It comes back to the main point: space exploration is *not* first of all a technological problem. It is, first of all, an economic and political problem.

And China has decided that a manned space program will enhance the value of its exports, as well as give a boost to its status. So much for the argument that space programs are best set aside until "problems on Earth are solved."

So it looks like China will build a space station down the road. Check out link #2 below for an informed summary of China's space goals by primo space analyst James Oberg.

I think they could do it now.

I agree with the guy to spoke of the rural problems, some say it'll take 25 years just to make that country even semi-modern.

If a space station happens, I hope in my heart of hearts that it's a world effort, collaboratively.

No doubt in my mind that they could.

However, they probably won't until they can solve their social problems which are HUGE. In the rural areas of the country with roughly half of the population(about 500 Million people), starvation and clean water are real problems.

Why would China need the support of the US? Why?

of course they can now...they never had the support of US because they are huge rivals. Yet it still managed to launch the man-carrying rocket into the space.

Why not? Russia built its own years ago (Mir in 1986) which they operated for 14 years. All you need are enough big rockets and the desire and financial ressources to do it.
