I'm Australian - mature aged male, married with family

Can you tell me under what conditions I'd have a fair chance of getting a Green Card to live in the United States??

Thank you.

Hello there!

It's a bit complex, and depends on a lot of factors. I don't usually like to point somebody to a web link when answering a question, but I think in this case it's your best bet for some good, comprehensive information. This is the site:

http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/faqsgen.htm

(Those last three letters should be "htm," but I think that the link will work if you click on it).

It's a "frequently asked questions" page from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Department. In the "P" section you'll find a group of questions about Permanent Residency (Green Cards). That'll help explain what the various requirements are. Given the number of considerations, that FAQ page does a very nice job at explaining all the aspects.

I'm actually a US citizen, but I'm living in Singapore with a "Green Card" here that I got because my employer wanted me to relocate and took care of the sponsorship. It's interesting to me how easy it is to convert to PR (Permanent Resident) status here as contrasted with the US. Singapore, it seems, recognizes that a good way to foster economic activity is by making it easy for foreign "talent" (not that I'm that talented) to live and work here. They even have something called an EntrePass where somebody with a good business plan who wants to operate in Singapore can get a renewable annual Green Card with a minimum of hassle and paperwork. The situation in the States is a little different, given the sensitivity to the "illegal immigration" issue at the moment. But people can (and do) get Green Cards from various countries, and that FAQ page has the best information on your prospects and on how to do it.

Good luck with it!

I don't have a clue what's involved in the process itself, but I would suggest you contact the American Embassy there for reliable information. Back in the '60s, I thought about relocating to Australia and wrote your Embassy in San Francisco. Within 10 days I was covered up with applications and information including how to find work when I arrived. Good luck.

You need a sponsor and/or a job. If you work for a company that wants you to move to the US that would be the easiest way. Also if you were accepted to a graduate program or something like that. In other words you have to have a reason for coming here and a way to support yourself. A sponsor vouches for you and insures you will be a good citizen while here.

Go here: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/services/residency/index.htm

Everything else is bogus. This is the United States government's web site on the conditions under which you can get a green card.

What special skills or talents do you have that could contribute to our society? I think that is important when applying for a Green Card. You could apply for a travel visa and go from there.

You would have to apply and wait in line. It is not as easy to get a green card these days.

Are you eligible for the green card lottery? I believe you are. That might be a good place to start.

I have included a site with information about the lottery and the US immigration site. I hope this is helpful.

G'day Digger!

Any ol' snoozer can get a green card if he can prove that he can support himself and his family (if they come).

It is best to have a valuable trade.

Good luck from one cobber to another.
