It really depends on your age. If you are in your late thirties or forties you could be entering perimenopause, which is the time before you actually go into menopause and your period stops. During perimenopause your hormone levels are changing and your periods get erratic. Sometimes they are normal, sometimes they are heavy and sometimes they are barely there.

However, if you are in your teens, twenties or thirties, it is possible that you have a hormonal problem and that can cause your periods to be light. You could have an ovarian cyst. (these things are not dangerous). Cysts vary in type (fluid filled, solid) but they can alter your periods a lot. You may not bleed as much, you may spot, or you may bleed heavily. There could be other things as well, but the doctor will investigate it obviously.

The key thing is that you are going to see your gynecologist about it, which is the most important thing. Only they can determine the root cause of what is going on. They may take blood to test your hormone levels, including estrogen, progesterone, thyroid, as well as your other organ functions, liver, kidney, etc. Or, they may want to do sonograms on you, one of which (called a transvaginal sonogram) is minimally invasive and does not hurt at all. A tube with a bulbous head (the whole thing is a bit bigger than a tampon and a little wider) is inserted into your vagina by you that has a condom on it for sterile purposes. A TV monitor is attached to it and as the doctor moves it, pictures of your uterus and ovaries are shown on the screen. This is a diagnostic tool. Another sonogram (externally, on your belly) is also done. You have to drink a LOT of water - and HOLD it for a while while this test is done as your bladder must be totally full so that your uterus and ovaries can be seen. A gel is placed on your belly -over your uterus and ovaries - and a similar tube is placed on it. It is also moved about and the doctor can see what is going on. It doesn't hurt at all but you will be dying to go to the bathroom !

Good luck!

I am glad to hear that you are going to see the doctor. You do not mention whether or not you are sexually active, nor your age. Make sure you tell the doctor. S/He will be better to help you than Y!A. Good luck and God bless.

It sounds like hormones or stress because I went through the same thing in my late teens and 20's.

Ask the doctor about it. He or she knows your case more than we do and can better advise you.

You never mentioned your age so I'm guessing your body is going through changes. This happens when you reach say your late 40's.
