They have no idea who they are yet, and are hoping someone else will like them if they merely follow the others . Kids who follow their peers are certainly not leaders or self motivators . They blindly let everyone else make decisions for them . It shows real leadership skills to take charge and be yourself . The later group will also take charge later in life !

I have been out of high school for a while now and looking back I realize high school is no different then any other social ladder. The main thing is no one wants to be on the bottom. Just like any social ladder the people who are the highest(Jocks,Best looking people,Rich,Smart,Hip....)set the standards everyone else follows. It's the same with celebrities outside of school. The people on the bottom are there mainly because someone needs to be on the bottom. When this happens then people become very scared of who is on the bottom and that is where rumors, bullying, name calling,racism....all start. The people on the top could care less it's the people in the middle who are fighting to avoid being at the bottom.

Certain parents teach this to their kids at a young age. When kids go to school, the kids taught this judge the other kids based on what mommy and daddy have taught them, making kids who weren't aware of it more aware. Soon it catches on. If you were called a name because you had on the wrong colored shoes, and change them to fit in, you'll notice the others who wear those "wrong colored shoes" and, in turn will call them names to fit in with those who originally started the name calling (at least, most will so they are accepted)... It's a vicious cycle.that gets worse as kids get older.

I wish I had learned what you have sooner than I did. I worried about my looks because I wanted to "fit in". I realized that no matter what I did I would never fit in so I chose to dress and do what I wanted to please myself....turns out that made me popular.

Don't lose sleep over it. Why does it bother you? Live and let live.
