Vertical take off and landing air vehicles with capabilities similar to helicopters is something which is not new. Before the F35, Harrier, and V-22 Osprey there were numerous attempts to create aircraft with capabilities similar to the helicopter. All or most of them proved to be unreliable, unpredictable, too costly and for the most part impractical. Even the vertical take-off and landing vehicles we have today are plagued with issues of reliability and practicallity. However, despite these vehicles similarity to helicopters most of these vehicles weren't meant to replace the helicopters role. I mean could you imagine a Harrier being utilized to carry accident victims from an accident scene, or lift a tank off the ground!? Helicopters are one of the most versatile and reliable flying vehicles with vertical take off and landing features. One need only study the Vietnam war to comprehend just how versatile and amazing these aircraft were and still continue to be.

The helicopter can take off almost straight up, hover, land straight down and fly backward.

The obvious answer would be take off vertically but certain planes can do that also such as a (sp) Harrier Jet. It can take off vertically, tilt the engines and move forward until it had enough momentum and then fly like a normal plane.
