I don't have any violent films for you but some good independent films are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Cache, and Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975 - Peter Weir directed).

I highly recommend the Seven Samurai, Rashoman and also rent the magnifcent seven along with it to see the similarities in directing. Akira kurosawa was a genius because he used the scenery so creatively. If you have not seen Enter the dragon, then you have not lived. It is Bruce Lee at his finest. I enjoyed Capote, the man who wasnt there and Transamerica.
