I read a Stephen book a while back and want to recommend it to a friend but I can't remember the title. The story was about an alien race that crashed landed on earth, and one of the aliens took over the lead character’s body and attempted to spread the infection by dropping a dog into a water processing plant.

It's not The Tommyknockers(which sucked). In The Tommyknockers, the people are just granted extra gifts by the alien race.
The book he's talking about is Dreamcatcher.

IT. have you ever seen the action picture? the radical is a narrative of 7 friends from city of Derry, Maine, and the non-linear narrative alternates between 2 distinctive time classes.that's a horror novel by Stephen King, revealed in 1986. that's considered one of his longest at over one thousand pages. definitely considered one of King's maximum visceral and picture works, It deals with themes which might at last become King staples: the flexibility of reminiscence, early existence trauma and the ugliness lurking at the back of a small-city facade.

If it was a big honking book it was tommyknockers. If it was dreamcatchers it is set in the winter.

It sounds like Dreamcatcher. I only saw the movie, but that sounds like the storyline.
