Don't lie to them. They'll find out. Parents and teacher DO talk to each other. If you tell them you're thinking about joining a club, what happens when they mention that to the teacher in charge? Or when your teacher mentions your detention to them? Then you're in trouble twice - once for the detention and once for lying.
I really hope you didn't get detention for chewing gum just once; I taught for 9 years and while I gave detention a time or two for gum, it was after MANY, MANY warnings. I was a band director so gum just really wasn't an option in my classroom.
Tell them the truth, serve your detention and still try to do a good job this year. Good luck!

If you're not getting into trouble every day like you did the previous year, I'm sure your parents can tell you're trying to behave in a more socially acceptable way. I had a lot of detention throughout high school. A lot of it my parents never knew about. Go to your detention on Friday, don't tell your parents about it, chalk it up to experience, learn from it and move on. Besides, if they do find out later at a parent teacher meeting that you were in detention that one time without any further incident, they probably won't get mad. Just don't tell them anything. Especially don't lie, that will make it worse later. If you don't tell them anything, you're not lying. Don't chew gum in class, unless you're good at hiding it. I still keep gum between my gum and my cheek to hide it from my bosses and I'm in the military. Imagine the trouble I'd get in.

I would wait until they're both in a decent mood, and be straight up with them. There is really no easy way to break it easily to your parents, unfortunately. Any way you put it, they're liable to freak, especially since you said it's only the second week of school, and you had promised to behave this year.
Even though the initial bite is going to sting, they will respect you for owning up to it, which is going to help build up that trust betwen you and them.
And I totally agree that schools are way harsh about gum-chewing, but if you examine it from their perspective, it is a pretty big deal. All those dark spots all over campus used to be gum, in someone else's mouth! And while I know you are respectful enough to spit it out in a trash can, not everyone is. They have no way of telling who spat their gum on the sidewalk, so for all they know, it could be you.
Best of luck with the entire situation!!

Just tell them. They will be more upset with you if you don't and then they find out. And then stay out of trouble after that. Chewing gum isn't that big of a crime anyway. Still, it is against the rules, so you got your punishment, but I would bet that your parents will be understanding...just let them know about it now, don't put it off.

This is the beauty and style section, so your question should really be posted elsewhere.
Just fess up, the more honest you are, the quicker they'll decide to treat you like an adult.
and from now on, remember that theres a time and place for gum chewing, and apparently your school is not one of them, so spit it out before you get through the door.

well i think you definitely have to tell your parents..it wouldnt be good if you started off the school year by lying or not being honest. um well since your dt is not for anything serious, like drugs or whatever, maybe your parents will think its dumb too. maybe they wont be upset at all. you'll never know unless you tell them. maybe if you've had dt's in past years for more serious stuff, they'll be happy that this time its only gum

Its best to just write them a note and put it on the fridge, then they may not fuss so bad.
Big deal ...gum???....teachers used to give gum for spelling words right.
Dont worry, your parents will understand and u all will laugh about it one day.

Just tell the truth, and say "That u HOPE u won't get in any trouble" and if u chew gum in skool, either swallow it, don't chew it, or throw it away, I just keep it in my mouth and don't chew till there aren't in any teachers.
