You should read a book by Ivan VanSertima called "The Golden Age of the Moors" to get more information on this topic. Its a VERY good read, with pictures and all.
BUT what exactly do you mean by the "Muslims of today"?
Could you please clarify that part of your question??
I can give you some information about the Moors who are an ethnic group in the African nation of Mali. They are the ones who conquered Spain and brought culture to Spain. They mixed with the local population as the Romans had done before. They are the orginiators of higher education, by establishing the original college town of Timbuktu. And they are black skinned people.
Now these Moors were Muslim, but as you should know Muslims come in all ethnic backgrounds from white Czechs, Chinese and west Africans. Just like Christians, Baha'i, Buddists etc.

Put it this way... the moors are what the Spaniards called muslims who came from North Africa and settled in the Iberian Peninsula. Those were of mixed African and Arab descent. They also interbred with the Spaniards there so it wasn't unusual to see darker skinned people with European features from that region. Eventually, the term was used to describe people of darker skin, regardless of religion throughout Europe.

On the other hand, "Muslim" refers to people whose religion is Islam. A muslim can therefore be any ethnicity (not just black or arabic).

Moors is an archaic term that's no longer in use outside its historical context.

It wouldn't be accurate to say that they're the same people. That would be like calling any modern day Spaniard a conquistador.

the two have been/are violent and oppressive to rule, subdue and dominate human beings to tension them to transform. it is a black mark interior the history of the Roman Catholic church. between the various black marks. i think the Roman Catholic church became into attempting to reclaim factors of the Holy Land for Christianity and the Christian East that have been taken over by Muslim rule. In doing so as that they attacked, tortured and killed Muslims, Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians, Jews and different political enemies of the pope. Crusading declined promptly for the duration of the sixteenth century with the creation of the Protestant Reformation and the decline of papal authority.

Yes a vast difference 1300 years. Also, back then, they rode on then ate their camels. Now they drive Mercedes Benz and eat camels. Back then they worshiped God now they either worship the oil dollar or some half baked swami wearing a tea towel.
