the two previous answers are very good

I might add that the independent variable is usually the controllable variable (whether as a test, or in a production process, or whatever)

a very simple example might be measuring the pressure in a pressure cooker on the stove

the independent variable would be the position of the knob (high, medium, low, etc)

the dependent variables would be a CONSEQUENCE of that, dependent on the independant variable setting

temperature and pressure would be dependent variables in this case, and would change with each knob setting

an independent variable is controlled by the person performing the experiment. the dependent variable is dependent on the effects of the independent variable.

the independent variable is the one that is unchanging (like time) and the dependent variable depends on the independent one (like, distance driven in respect to time)
