You get advantage and only advantage if you are doing Yoga (Yog) correctly. Age has nothing do anything with it, just that you should not be suffering from heart disease. I would strictly advice you do start doing Yog under the guidance of some good Yog instructor. Even if you are suffering from heart disease than also you can do Yog under the guidance of good instructor who can tell you what to do and what not to do. Every sort of health related problems have its cure in Yog. Yog takes time to show its good results, so be patient. If any it is creating some sort of problem then it's clear that you are not doing it properly.
So all you need is a good Yog instructor. You will find no medicine or no exercise is better than Yog

Yoga is great, look for Hatha Yoga which trains your breathing, and is a neat system that is designed to promote good health.

Pros: get your life back under control
Cons: Depends on your instructor

Your instructor is critical.
Your specific health condition and the state of your body has to be taken into account when doing the poses; some can be modified to cater specially to your needs. Some poses should not be done by people with certain health issues.

Look for someone with experience.

You start from the beginning :)
When I started I couldn't bend and touch my toes. Now I can keep my forehead to my knees. It's a slow process that should not be hurried, takes some discipline, and is worth it.

Even my 70 year old dad is taking classes, and he's slowly getting it!

I am much more relaxed, even my temper has calmed; hard to believe, but I just seem more centred.

Yoga is great, try is with a good instructor, do your bit, and you will not regret it.

Yoga is great no matter what your age. I go to a class where the age ranges from about 20 up to 60+. Don't try and start on your own though - definitely find a class. Several people have suggested hatha yoga and that's fine but personally I feel that finding an instructor you like is more important that what type of yoga you do - there are lots out there. Personally I do Dru Yoga which uses a lot of visualisation and very gentle stretches but I chose it because the teacher is wonderful and she makes it a pleasure to be there every week.

Check out these websites to try and find some classes near you - I suggest trying several to see what you are comfortable with:

Or if you're in Scotland:

Hey there,
Yoga can be a great friend in every diet. It's all about hormones balance. There are no "bad" hormones. But when hormones get unbalanced, bad things happen in your body. Your body releases cortisol when you're under stress. It's part of the whole “fight or flight” response. Increased cortisol levels could be making you fat. The kind of fat you are most likely to store from elevated cortisol is called visceral fat — the dangerous belly fat that’s linked to diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

I'm following this great online program that teaches how to use YOGA to lose weight. You should check it out as well. This is the link of the site: http://yogafitness.toptips.org
Hope it helps.

"hatha yoga" is what you want.

A nice warm up with a sunrise salutation.

Pros -- too many to list

Cons? It takes some discipline, you have to actually go to a class and meet people (who are probably way deep into it).

I think you should try at least four classes and then decide.

Peace
