I had 5 snails in my tank then one day I realized I had 3--there was no indication of what happened to them (not even a shell was left)--then today I come home and it seems like the remaining 3 are dead. The largest one has attached himself to one of the smaller ones who is all closed up. The third is just floating all closed up in the water. I noticed this weekend that they were moving sluggishly (if you can say so for a snail) but paid it no mind. All of the fish seem to be fine.

Does anyone seem to know what happened to my snails and how I can prevent it in the future

I know everyone hates snails but mine had character and were very interesting to watch.

Okay now it seems like the large one at least has detached himself from teh smaller ones and all three are stuck to the glass.

The problem is that the 2 smaller ones have cracked shells and the larger one has a very much intact tail--it also has gotten larger over the past few months and is now twice the size he was when I bought him.

Are the smaller ones malnourished?

I have a goldfish tank--20 gallons with about 7 goldfish .5-2 inches and 6 very small minnows.

I originally had 5 snails because I had an overgrowth of algae in my tank--which they got rid of in about 2 days. Now the tank is constantly clear and there has been no algae so is it possible that the snails might not be getting enough food.

Snails can be extremely susceptible to water quality having no scales to protect their soft bodies. Try increasing your water changes using bottled distilled water instead of de-chlorinated tap water (which can contain phosphates that increase algae growth. If you are worried about your snail starving, add a slice of cucumber every now and then. You may have to weight it down with a rock.

Your snails are dieing because your tank is massively overstocked and the water quality is killing the snails. Snails are extremely sensitive to ammonia and high nitrates.

The rule for baby-juvenile fancy goldfish is 10 gallons PER fish. (ryukins, moors, orandas, fantails, ect.)
For baby-juvenile long bodied goldfish, its 20 gallons PER fish. (comets, commons, shubunkins) Adults need atleast 50 gallons PER fish. They need ALOT of filtration because they excrete so much ammonia aswell as regular partial waterchanges. THey grow to be 12-14 inches and will swallow smaller fish.

Ammonia needs to be 0ppm, nitrites needs to be 0ppm, nitrates needs to be under 20 ppm
Test your water to see and do 30 percent partial waterchanges daily until you can get rid of some fish. Make sure not to go past 50 percent and make sur ethe new water is dechlorinated and the same temp as the water thats in the tank.
The way you can tell if a snail is dead is to take it out and smell it, if it smells rancid that means its dead if there is no smell to it or an earthy smell that means its alive. They float and close up completely when there is something wrong with the water quality.

i did come home one day to find my snailcompletely GONE!

all though his shell was still there and when i lifted it out of the water it stunk soooo much, no joke!!!

uhhh i was gone for about a week when he died so there was LOTS of algea... same in your case?

the ones stuck to eachother may be mating, especially if they are floating.. DON'T let them reproduce when they do its about 100-200 little baby snails covered all over your tank and your other fish may die. Look for little clear sacs stuck to plants and ornaments, if you see any thats eggs take em out A.S.A.P!!!

in the missing snails case theres not much i can say, depends on the type of fish you have, if they are chiclids or any agressive fish at all they could possibly have eatin your snails, shells and all buddy!
I recomend that you go to your local pet store for info. they are really smart.. lol hint hint*they are the pet store*

sorry thats the best i know,
GOOD LUCK!

i ended up with a lot when i bought some moss for the tank. the snails have reproduced faster than the guppies.

i know that when my friend puts snails in with his fish, the fish eat them.

check http://www.applesnail.net

cracked shells might be that your tank has a pH that is too low, or one of a few other things. check the site for a full report on deseases.
