I think that the song is saying that, love may not be a permanent thing but you can have it in the moment. Since the musical deals with a lot of loss and personal tragedy, the characters don't know how long they will be able to be with their loved ones. They can't own that love, but they can live in it as long as possible.

It's a quote from the musical Rent. The entire musical is about living in the moment. There are a lot of clever references throughout the play about how the characters aren't expecting to live long ("Life Support's a group for people coping with life, you don't have to stay too long," is one that jumps out). How I see it, "buying" love would be expecting a permanent or long term relationship. "Renting" would mean taking love for as long as you have it, whether it be for a day or year or longer. You still get the same thing, you just take it one day at a time.

It's ironic -- you can't get true love by purchasing things for someone (they'll fall in love with the things, not you!) but you can "rent" something. It's not really love, but "rented love". This happens if you buy lots of gifts or do other material things to gain a fake love from somebody who knows that if they act as if they love you, they'll keep getting more!

Hope it helped :-)
