Why is "like" used so much, like: "Like, we went to the movies today, and like it was so awesome, we like saw this person and like...". Not all teenagers do it, but some use it seldom and some use it religiously.

Hopefully it's just a phase and next year it will be something else. I'm also getting tired of people saying "so" all the time such as "I so don't want to go to band practice." But I'm getting concerned that "for free" is with us to stay. People can't seem to understand that it's either " you can buy it for $2.00" or "it's free." I think that using "like" all the time is the new century's answer to the valley girl talk.

What I was told, a long time ago was that use of such words is a crutch, it's a substitute for vocabulary. When I was growing up we used "man" and simply "uh," to punctuate every sentence. Be patient, there will be some new word come along to replace "like." But, like, man, it'll be like the same thing, man.

I remember saying "like" a lot when I was a teenager. Did it all start with the song "Valley Girl" during the 80's?

It's become popular because it's an easy filler word, instead of using better word choices.

"Like, we went to the movies today, and like it was so awesome, we like saw this person and like..." --------->

We went to the movies today, it was awesome. We saw this person there who..."

I find myself using like as a kind of preface word (almost along the lines of "and also" rather than "and" or "also") when I want to make a minor point in a hurry-it also serves as kind of a prompt to the listener "evaluate this."

they use it as a filler, such as well, or you know, and so forth, because they cant think as fast as they can talk, they dont stop to consider their words. and movies just copy what is going on and then foster the mistakes for a few more generations.

They can't string together more than a few words at a time, so they have to put something in to fill the pauses.
