I know how frustrating this can be, I can get cold sores also. I have had them since childhood, and the best thing that I have found to use is L-Lysine. This is an amino acid which is naturally produced in the body, but when you have an outbreak, the level in your system has dropped. I take at least 500 mg every day, and will double or even triple that amount if I am under stress from work or traveling. You can also crush one of the tablets and put the powder on the sores and it will dry them up very quickly. You can purchase L-Lysine in any health food store, drug store or in the health sections of grocery stores and Walmart. I hope this helps, good luck and have a good night!

Have you ever used the over the counter ointment, Abreva? I've never had a cold sore, but my husband does, and Abreva is the ONLY thing that will stop one from coming on when you first starting to get the sensation that one is coming. If you all ready have one, it'll make it heal much faster. It's kinda expensive, around $10 - $12, but it honestly works. Most pharmacists will tell you that it's the only one out there that actually heals the sore, rather than just making it feel better temporarily.

I suffer from horrible cold sores, I starting using this OTC product called RELEEV last fall, and as soon as I get the tingle I use it and most of the time the cold sore doesnt pop, if I catch it late, it doesnt get really large or painful and they clear much faster. I get huge ones almost constantly all winter and this stuff is awesome, I use it several times a day, its a bit expensive but last forever and it works awesome... I can tell you I have used every over the counter, and alot of prescription stuff and this stuff is fabulous think its about $16.00 for a tiny bottle but it really lasts a long time, you have to rub it in well, its a liquid not a cream or gel. My ENT told me to try it.

The best solution is to consult your dentist and ask for a prescription for Zovirax. This drug comes in either a topical cream which is to be applied 6 times per day or it also comes in a pill form. The drug interferes with the DNA replication process of the offending virus which is reproducing itself on the surface of your skin. The drug is a little expensive, but works well by drastically shortening the presence of the fever blister.

Fever blisters develop whenever one's immune system is stressed and by exposure to a lot of sun. They are more prevalent in some people than others. Do not confuse these vesicular pustules with aphtous ulcers (canker sore) which are on the inside of the mouth and found on the cheeks and inside the lips.

Before Abreva, my husband always used a cold tea-bag on it when it first started coming on. Something in the tannic acid of the tea helps dry them up.

When you feel that very first little tingle, start using Abreva...pricey but it works! And if you still apply makeup, use Q-tips to keep from contaminating your makeup.
