I've read about how dehydration and a whole host of other issues can result in low blood volume but nothing showing that low iron is a factor. I ask because I suspect that my OB was using scare tactics to get me to take my vitamins.

I don't know, but I don't think so...Low iron is just less red blood cells. But the volume of the blood could be normal...
Volume of the blood is something diffrent...But they are somehow related..if your blood volume increases and you don't take the necessary amount of iron to fill it up..then the iron can be low...
usually if you are dehydrated your iron is ok..because the volume is small...and if you get hydrated again the volume increases..but the iron needs to be replaced...
But they both give the same sensation: High potensivity..you are ligh headed and feel like fainting
I've been through both..I was very anaemic a few years ago..and very dehydrated a few month ago..during the first trimester of pregnancy...because of morning sickness
So after I got back hydrated I was told to take my vitamins...beacause my blood volume increased a lot
So that's a good idea to take you vitamins?
They get me heartburns...but I tryng to take them with food..and before going to bed...this way I don't feel the heartburn
Good Luck

No low iron does not mean low blood..have the doctor run an FE/UIBC and test on you...(Unstaturated Iron Binding Capacity) this will give you and your OB a measure of how well your body is using/maintaining the iron in your blood stream...a low result from this test may mean that you will not be able to replenish blood loss from the delivery as quickly as the doctor would like, which is most likely his/her concern...hope this helps

Well I was in the hospital about 18 months ago with low iron and had to have two units of blood. I have had very heavy periods for years so I think that was the case even though the doctors said they couldn't say that was it for sure.

Low iron results in anemia, which does involve a low red blood cell count and tends to be especially problematic (and much more commong) during pregnancy because of the increased blood volume required to support the growing fetus.

Here's a link to a Wikpedia article on it if you want more info.

Good luck!

By low blood volume I suspect you mean anemia, which is common in pregnancy and taken care of with vitamin and mineral supplements, so take the vities, dear one. They are good for the both of you.
