That's the main reason, because we think we can just beat others into submission, if needed. The broader answer is that we have abundant natural resources, and we have separation of church and state, which I think gives us an enormous advantage over many other countries, where they monitor your church/mosque attendance, and the religious leadership is also the civil leadership. I think that's a rather unpleasant and dangerous situation for a country to be in.

We also have (relatively) good public schools, and a lot of our children go on to college, making the average years of schooling higher here than in most countries. That academic and intellectual achievement, along with the things that flow from it, also make the US a super power.

Americans think they can make anything, do anything, and overcome any obstacle. That "can do" attitude is not the view of the citizenry of many other countries.

We have our hands in just about everything, including basically every country. Keep in mind how almost every Industrial Country does have it's economy influenced by the U.S. Seriously the reason we are actually called a Super Power is the INFLUENCE not the military might. That is why China is coming close to becoming a Super Power based on the emergance of it's economy, it would already be one except for the fact that it's economy is more or less a farce. China has the chance to become a super power because of the power of its manufacturing base. Cheap Labor will do that.

The main reason is because we were one of two major world powers that were dividing up the world. Just like the Spanish and the Portuguese dividing up the new world, the USA and the USSR divide up the world after WW II. The reason we were on top was not only because of our military but because of our strong economy.

The British had been the only super power after WW I but WW II destroyed their economy and conversely saved ours from the great depression. Ever since WWII America has been a super power due to its military AND it's economy. The USSR was a super power but have been laid to waste by economics (thank you Ronald Regan, wherever you are).

Currently the only other nations considered a super power is China and that is two fold, a billion Chinamen to draw from for an army and a booming economy.

I hope that answers your question without any politics.

I don't think it's the US that claims to be a Super Power, but other countries say that they are.. I think that when a country is labeled a Super Power, it's because not only do they have military strength, but they are a leader in helping the third world countries, as well as coming to the aid of people when they are in need, and tragedy strikes. I also think a Super Power is a country that is active in space exploration, and developments in medicine. Those are just a few reasons that I guess the USA is known as a Super Power.

1. Most powerful military

2. Most advanced space program.

3. Largest World Economy (as measured by Gross National Product - http://www.scaruffi.com/politics/gnp.html )

4. Most influential democratic country.

5. Cultural influence - the massive proliferation of McDonalds, Coke, Pepsi, Walmart, Microsoft and Hollywood movies worldwide. I'm not aware of any one other country that has such a massive cultural influence worldwide.

Our standard of living is higher than any other country in the world. No, really, it is.

We have THE best medical care, THE best entertainment (did you know it's our #2 export?) and we have a long list of inventions to our credit...much longer by far than any place else.

We also have more lawyers per capita than any other country, but no place is perfect.

Generally, the U.S. has power in many ways, not just military might.

despite her great military, they are getting beaten just about anywhere they invade, they may be able to bomb a country back into the stone age, but in the end it's guerrilla warfare that wins the war
