Both. Politically we're definitely worse off. We've become strongly polarized, with blind fascist sheep on one side and teeth-gnashing crybabies on the other.
In terms of freedoms and civil liberties, we're also worse off. Emperor Nero has seen fit to burn Rome in order to save it, and our Constitution is seen as an impediment to fighting crime & boogeymen in the eyes of our leaders.
But in other respects, I think we're actually better off. The economy, believe it or not, is improving. New scientific advances continue to pour out day after day, and technology likewise continues its ceaseless innovation. I don't know if our overall standard of living is any higher, but it's not any lower either, by most measures.
So I guess whether we're better or worse off today than before 9/11 depends on your point of view and what it is you're looking at.

I think the only thing that has come from this is: It has opened the eyes in Washington that we were not in tune to our surroundings. Allowing foreigners into our country, on our planes, in our land without a blink of the eye. We lived by how great the U.S. was said to be. Yet our reputation as being "powerful" allowed many to do wrongful things to our people and nation because some people higher up, did not do their jobs properly. That is it in a nut shell. I pray they have learned from this and take their lives along with their fellow Americans lives much more seriously instead of looking the other way.
We remain worse because you hear of no real security
to protect all of us from what was and is today.

Much, much worse . The U.S took the bait and plunged the western world into a war they can never win. The terrorist will win, not by killing people, but by convincing our leaders to take away all our freedom. The money being spent on the war on terror is making Osama laugh all the way to the bank.

It is a worse place. I wish with all my heart that Bill Clinton could have stayed another term in office. I feel that all this hatred and tyranny could have been avoided...but (sigh) we are in this reality now...perhaps because we manifested it ourselves. Does this mean we are becoming worse human beings? Or is it that we need to expunge our inner demons, in order to evolve? Are we in the process of just cleaning our inner house?

Hmm, certainly worse in terms of personal security and the interruption to everyday life.
On the other hand, at least everyone cards are on the table and we know clearly where everyone stands vis a vis supporting terrorism, pro-alliance, anti-Western, anti-Muslim etc. etc.

Depends who you are.
If you're a Haliburton/KBR employee, you're swimming in money.
If you're a loved one of someone who died on 9/11, you're pissed off that Ann Coulter called you a traitor.
If you're an Israeli national, you're happy that you were warned 2 hours in advance not to go to WTC.
If you're an Iraqi, you're pissed.
If you're a US soldier, you're demoralized
If you're an average American, you're confused and scared now that liquids are taken away from you at checkpoints.
Overall, much worse.

The world is defenitely more unstable.
One needs to be more aware of their surroundings.
And not be easily taken in with propoganda .
Be proud of your country and stand together through the bad times and you will have a better chance of survival.
During times of war in the past the people of the nation stood together backed up their defence force and their government.
A good day to all!

Worse. There is a war in Lebandon, Afaghanistan, and Iraq. The bad part is that our own president is still pushing the war even though experts and ordinary people don't want it. Second, the fumes on ground zero is deadly and is known to cause health problems toward the volunteers. Till this day, they are still working there.

Well, hard to say. I would have to guess worse because of the war, steve's death, obviously the people who died in the towers are gone, and Life is just a bit closer to the grave.
So yeah, I'd have to say worse, I can't think of anything that's better today.
