I have the chance to live in either the U.K. (England more specific) or Italy (language is not a problem). I'm confused as to which one to choose. So, if you were in my shoes which would you pick and why please? Thanks very much for the answers!

I have lived in England for a year and visited Italy. I have also lived abroad where I didn't know the language very well.
Italy is very nice with lots of historical and asthetic attractions. It has so many great museums and the food is wonderful. The weather tends to be more favourable there too.
England also has a lot of history and "pretty things". I found it more expensive and sometimes some of the "yobs" (teenage hooligans) to be quite annoying.

In many ways, I'd choose England becuase of the cultural similarities and the ease of understanding what's going on. Even though you'll be able to pick up a lot of Italian over a year, you won't understand everything on T.V. or on signage or announcements. I found that a little frusterating.
If you do go to Italy and if you are going with another English speaking person, I'd suggest to practice Italian with each other while there. Don't just speak English. It will be harder to pick up the langauge otherwise!

I have lived and worked in both, and I would say this: If you need to make a living, and if you are going there alone, choose England. Italy's wages are exasperatingly low, and as you would know, it's not really a cheap place to be. Making friends is not easy if it's Italians you're after, because they are deep and have older friendships that take precedence over newer ones. So, you could find yourself poor and lonley in Italy unless you bring your own family or have relatives there who will take you in. If that is the case, the low wages are not a problem. Also, keep in mind that you can fly from London to Rome in under 90 minutes and for about 50 dollars max for a weekend, every weekend, if you wish. Living in England is easy. The wages are high, the market is wide open, getting stuff done is a jiffy, and meeting really nice people is almost automatic. Life in England is excellent if you're a people person, and full of opportunity. Just keep in mind that it also has an ugly side - crime there is rampant, and it's mostly late-night/ early morning hour mugging type stuff, done by drunk yobs who need to score drugs. Better spend the extra buck and live in a nice neighbourhood.

I'd go to Italy. People are very friendly and open. The weather is much better, and so is the food.
England? Hm, you can't go wrong with England, the same language, similar culture.
I'm sure you'd be happy in both.

It's a tough choice as I would love to live in either place, but Italy wins by a hair. It's got great weather, lots of history and most important is centrally located in a region that has a bizillion places to visit.

How about Italy just for the culture and the climate. Too much rain in England; plus, one doesn't have to pay money to enter Rome's downtown area vs. London's.

England is probably easier to adjust to, but Italy is more of a cultural change. Depends on what your looking for.

Bad weather in England ... Grey rainy sky :( ... England is sad !

Cool Mediterranean weather in Italy ... Great food (Pizza and Pasta) ... wonderful rocky and sandy beaches ... The language is great (sound like bohemian ) ... The people are funny .

>>>> ITALY WINS <<<<
