A quality or trait that identifies a substance (matter) is called a property. The property of a substance stays the same even if the volume changes. Every substance has two kinds of properties: Physical properties and Chemical properties.

A physical change is one that alters the state or condition of matter. The chemical composition remains unaltered. Procesess such as cutting, breaking, machining, melting of solids are examples of physical changes. Water molecules are uneffected by the melting of ice.

The ways in which a substance undergoes chemical reactions are chemical properties. Substances are converted into other substances in the process of chemical reactions. For example a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen will explode on heating to form water. Chemical changes often release energy in the form of heat of light in the process.

Texture and shape are indeed propeties of matter, as are colour, taste, smell, density, and texture.
