It’s hard to believe one little baby could cause a public relations nightmare.

But that’s what has happened ever since little Suri Cruise was born to Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise last April. It's been 80 or so days since Suri was born and still no one has seen her picture. I reported in this space some time ago that a photo shoot of Suri had been proposed and an auction set for celebrity magazines right after her birth. But the auction was abruptly cancelled.

That was the last time anyone discussed releasing Suri’s image to the world.

Yesterday, the Web site TMZ.com reported that Suri’s birth certificate was filed late and that there were seemingly mysterious elements to its completion. You can already feel the momentum spreading in much the same way “Paul is dead” became a Beatles phenomenon back in 1969. Rumors abound about Suri: She doesn’t exist, Katie was never pregnant, they had to find a baby that looks like Tom, etc.

Of course, none of this is true. But as the stories spread and Cruise remains silent, his career — heck, his entire image — is being dismantled after 22 years of meticulous care. Last night, Yahoo! Entertainment ran a story about the “missing” baby and published links to blogger sites that make fun of the whole situation.

And we wonder why “Mission: Impossible III” was such a hopeless underachiever at the box office. Cruise’s entire life work has been eroded by a series of calamities over the last year. But “Where is Suri?” may be the one that pushes the whole misbegotten enterprise over the edge.

It doesn’t help that Cruise and Holmes have not married, either. Cruise publicly professed his love for her over and over (and over). But if their relationship is so sound, where is the wedding? Silence about constant reports of a prenup or a contract that hasn’t been signed isn't doing Cruise any good, either.

I think Tom and Katie are by far the wackiest and strangest couple in hollywood, but their baby is precious nonetheless. I think Suri is very beautiful and she looks like her father, not so much like Katie. I love her bright eyes, she is absolutely gorgeous! To people who are saying her eyes look Asian, Tom sort of has those almond shaped eyes, so I think that's where she got it from. And I think people are being very rude about Suri, just because they don't like Tom and Kate and saying she looks like an alien or what not. She is just a baby, all children are beautiful and God's little miracles.

Cute, but can't help the feeling that the photos are doctored. Tom isn't that young looking anymore. The photo makes Suri look like a long awaited God for the both of them... For Katie to look more grown up and Tom to look less gay. I think she is very cute though

ya well i haven't seen her but she is really cute suppose of ly so she is going to have a good life and katie is going to slim down b/c she bought a bunch of clothes that were size 2 so ya. i hope suri has a good life haveing such famous parents where will she go to school

I'm so sick of hearing about her! All Tom is doing is trying to save some face after his movie company gave him the boot! Why do you think he apologized to Brooke Shields?? Looks to me that he is trying right all the "wrongs" the media has been roasting him on.

yeah she looks gorgeous with her beautiful long black hair.... but she looks asian to me. that confused me. OOOhhh maybe Katie had an affair. Thats my theory anyway.
