There is no sole element that drives the society of Earth and the flow of time and life. I believe that many elements work and coexist together and help each other out, whether they be good or bad elements. One of these key elements that makes the world go round is sex, sexual appeal and anything sex-related. Hey, if it sells and if it makes money, you'll find it anywhere. This can be said for sexual appeal. Television and internet is pumped with it more than ever, and that is one of the key elements that drive our society. Sex and sexual desires can cause us to kill. Another key element is money. Money is power, and time is money. Money drives the gears that operate the world's economy and the world's growth and society. Without it, we'd probably be back in the Medieval age still. Greed stems from money, or perhaps it is the other way around. Either way, both money and greed, both of which are key elements in the operation of the Earth, are what make the gears below the surface turn and turn and turn. A third key element is hostility; the urge to want to do harm to another. I believe that this is one of the very first thoughts anyone ever concieves. If someone hurts you, you want to hurt them back. If someone wins against you, you want to get them back. Jealousy can also cause us to kill. Hostility and jealousy can be found at the core of the axis of the Earth, what causes the Earth to rotate. Without these urges, humanity would be nowhere and would be lost, and society and economy would not exist. In the end, the worst and darkest thoughts and urges of mankind are the very elements that drive our society, our Earth, and our lives.

Reason. It is the only thing that truly elevates us above the level of animals, and makes possible the civilized, technologically advanced long life of leisure we have today. Love is certainly important, but it would mean nothing in a world consumed by superstition and irrationality. Reason is the prerequisite that makes all the other important things in the world possible.

this question isnt an easy question to answer, but i personally think that 'the most important thing in the world' would be your values, since everyone has their own values and beliefs...

With all due respect to Pathfinder Level 7's answer: I would submit the answer is even simpler: love.
To love God and one's neigbor is important, but it leaves out God's love in the answer. So, "just" love or in the words of one early rock group, "All it takes is love."

"in the world"..

That excludes out of this world stuff like god and alien enemas..

In the world, the most important thing FOR HUMANS is likely survival..

FOR STONES.. hmm.. what do stones want?
