Yes, you need a TV to us a Tivo. A Tivo is a device that connects between your cable antenna or satellite service and and your television. The tivo service allows you to record your favorite programs and play them back on your TV as well as the ability to pause and rewind live tv programs while you are watching them. If tou have cable, I would recommend calling your cable company and asking them if they have a "DVR" available. DVR stands for "Digital Video Recorder". If they do, it is the same concept as a tivo but is built into your cable box. I would also recommend that you pay to have someone come and install the new "DVR" box from the cable company and use the opportunity to ask the installer how it works and how you can set it up to record your favorite tv shows. If you have Directv, call directv and order their DVR and installation, again asking for installation and taking advantage of having the installer there to ask how to record and watch your programs.

The tivo service also requires a phone connection to activate and update. Once it is set up the Tivo service is easier to use and more powerful than the Cable company DVR, but adding an extra box and subscription to the mix makes it a little harder to get started. If you have more questions on the Tivo I have found the sales reps at best buy stores to be knowledgable and willing to help you get started with Tivo.

Actually everyone is wrong here, at least partially. All you need to record onto a TiVo, is a signal source coming from a cable, sat, or other video signal. So if you need to remove your TV to another room, the TiVO will still keep recording (just as if you were using a cassette to record the radio, and removed the speakers, you would still be taping the sound even though you weren't actually hearing it at that moment.) However, to watch the recorded signal (and I suppose to have programmed it to record in the first place) you would actually need a TV (or some sort of monitor/projector) to see what is on the TiVo. A TiVo is like a computer hard-drive that digitally records video.

Tivo is a device that records tv shows for you. Like a video recorder. But it records it to a hard drive (like a computer). You can input into Tivo what shows you like or what actors you like and it will record everytime that show or actor is on. Thne you can play it back when you want. It also alows you to pause live TV. And pick up where you left off. It is the neatest thing since sliced bread.

The person above me is 100% correct. I had to have work done on my tv and when I got it back, tivo had everything recorded and waiting for me when I hooked it back up.

yes and it's very expensive. It's like having a VCR built in to your T.V. With many fancy functions that charges you for every movie you tape. We had it and canceled after one month and got billed for services we didn't have or want I called my lawyer and he made it go away!...what a world!

Think of it as a VCR with no tape. You need a tv to see anything.
