As a Canadian travelling through Europe, I sometimes chose to show my Canadian flag on my backpack so people knew I was not stereotypical American. I have several American friends, and have met wonderful Americans in my travels, so I know that not all Americans fit into the stereotypes. But, if I had to list typical "bad stereotypes", they would include:
rude
self-absorbed as a nation
are money hungry
"If it's not my way, it's wrong" mentality
have little knowledge about things outside the USA. (Case in point: when Britany Spears visited Switzerland, she kept on calling it Sweden during an interview. This really helped to re-inforce the stereotype.)
"OMG! Like, He's so hot! and, like, what she thinking that she could even, like, talk to him? She's sooo way below his league!"

I have yet to meet an American who actually embodies all of these stereotypes, but I do see elements of them appear in some time to time.

What goes around, comes around. We've (Americans) been stereotyping each other and the world non-stop since the beginning. We constantly call the French cowards, when they had no choice but to surrender or see their country flattened and their populations exterminated, then fought valiantly in the best underground ever known and during the invasion. We stereotype Arabs, Jews, lump Orientals together because we're too lazy to learn their cultural differences and lump Africans together too. We think all Slavic and southern European women are coarse, fat and hairy, make fun of Poland, call every Irishman a drunk and so on. It's time we got a taste of our own medicine!

lol - point taken! Let's just say that these are just some of the ways in which Americans ARE stereotyped. While I don't think all Americans think this way, enough have to provoke the response and our foreign policies throughout our history have contributed to more serious negative opinions of us as a group.

If you're talking about people from other nations stereotyping Americans, I, personally, wouldn't waste my time on them. I know who I am, and I know what this country is about. If a bunch of people who have trouble even spelling Democracy and Opportunity, who I don't know and will probably never meet, want to lump us all together as fat and lazy, let 'em go crazy with it.

those who stereotype are wrong. its judging. unless you personally know an individual you cantput people into one general group and just assume they all do the same things or have the same interest. every person is an individual no matter where they come from so people who stereotype are wrong

Try being a white South African! Gosh! Closed-mindedness will kill us all... it is at the root of so much evil. I think most people who judge are ignorant and really just believes what they have been told by other ignorant people. Understand somebody/something first and then pass judgement...

Ok people that are sterotypical are just jealous because they have nothing better to do other than make themselves look bad. Just for them to get attention they have put someone else down. So if you are one of those sterotypical people that just like to make people look bad and sad. Look at yourself because your just making an even more fool of yourself.

There are so many Americans who Stereotype other countries. I'm not saying that other countries should stereotype us, I'm just saying we shouldn't be too harsh about it. Defend America, but don't go "OMFG I'M GONNA SHOOT YOU!11111"

I would say--Unless you have lived in the USA, worked here, enjoyed real freedom and prosperity, you are being lied to by your media or your religious leaders.
