Should I of not tightened the top nut so much?
My car manual did not say anything about how much to tighten the nut.

yeah that's about how much I tightened them when the shaft started to turn, but that was to the point that I smashed the bushing pretty flat.

you did OK,i own a repair shop,,and your supposed to tighten them down good ,,or they will rattle,,and squeak,,it will be fine ,,always tighten shocks down good and tight,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.

I usually just tighten them until the shaft starts to spin on the shock and call it good.

The bushing should bulge a little bit from its original shape but don't crush them. That said crushing them won't ruin them,just loosen the nut some.
