I can't believe people still say that!
My daughter's friend's mom told her the same thing.
It does NOT take away your virginity. (Don't be too hard on Mom, she probably heard it from her Mom.)
If you use a "junior" size, you will find them very comfortable. I used tampons from my first period at 16 and I was a virgin until I was married at 22.
When I was younger (teens), I used "regular"- there was no junior size, and I once had to borrow one over my boyfriend's house. His mom used "super". It was a little uncomfortable to use but no pain at all, and once it was in place, I didn't even feel it. (Properly used, you should not feel them once inserted.)
P.S. I wanted to use them because I thought they were way less messy too. If you still can't convince your mom ask her to question the pediatrician. That will surely do the trick!

You are right. Using a tampon is not having sex, therefore you are Not losing your virginity. And to answer your big question. As long as you have it in right you won't feel it. It might take you a couple tries before you get it, but once you do you will know it.

It would be extremely very very rare to lose virginity with a tampon but it can happen. It can happen with a bicycle accident or other kind of accident as well.
I would say Mom is right wait until you are not a virgin that is if the hymen matters to you at all.

Personally, I don't recommend using tampons because they can lead to serious infection if not changed often. You will still be a virgin should you decide to use tampons, but there might be some pain while inserting it because of your "inexperience" or small vaginal opening (hymen). The hymen may rupture a bit, causing some bleeding, but, to answer your question, you will technically be a virgin as you are not having intercourse.
To avoid any pain or TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome- staph infection involving bacteria and rotten blood), I recommend sticking to the PAD! I believe it's better for menstrual "waste" to flow out of the body and not be stoppered!

You will NOT lose your virginity by using tampons. The only way to lose your virginity basically, is by having sexual intercourse.
And no, it doesn't hurt, just take your time, read the instructions first.
