In the "x-files" episode about it (starring the "cigarette-smoking man") they theorize that the assassin was hidden in a storm drain along the route at the plaza.
If Lee Harvey Oswald was shooting, he might have done this from the Book Depository Building (now a museum). Other witnesses saw shots coming from ahead of the cars, back of a fence (the grassy knoll) at the same time.
Oliver Stone's film JFK is a good place to start piecing together the events of this day. He has a lot of good points in the movie and questions the possibility of there being only 3 gunshots. If there were more than 3 shots, there had to be more shooters than Lee Harvey Oswald. Lots of mystery surrounds this event. One of the biggest issues is Lee Harvey Oswald himself, and the fact that he was treated so well by the Russians, and the U.S. government. The biggest mystery of all was that he could bring his wife to the U.S. with him----this was impossible at that time in the Cold War, and it's a mystery why the Russians permitted it. There is more interesting stuff about the Assassination in the movie NIXON, in the scenes when Richard Nixon is in Dallas on the day Kennedy is killed, and suspects something strange is going on with his political "hosts" there.

I remember the Assassination, and at the time, the weirdest thing of all to the American public was :
1. How efficiently Oswald was murdered live on tv so he could never appear in court or be questioned publically.
2. How he got his wife out of Russia in the first place.
