It is about following a rational, unbiased method to test a possible explanation for an unanswered question.

You might say, I think it's easier to hit heads than tails when I flip a coin. Using science you'd flip a coin many many times and write down all the results no matter if they disagree with you or not. After 1000 flips there is almost a 50% chance you'll have more heads than tails. So what if you had 513 heads and only 487 tails? You might then think that yes it is easier to get heads. However you haven't proven it to 100% certainty and in fact you'd be wrong. Science never proves anything to 100% certainty. But with each test, the probability that its findings are correct increases. Confused yet?

Science is about learning how the world works, so that we can do things to make it work better. One forms a hypothesis about why a particular phenomenon occurs, and then devises tests to see whether the hypothesis is valid. If it stands up to all the tests that anyone ever applies to it, it can be considered to be established, and it may be used for everyday prediction. If it fails, you come up with a different hypothesis and start over.
