At what age is it safe to put a blanket in the crib? I dress her in full footy pj's, but I'm always unsure if she's warm enough.

You can use a thin blanket now if you tuck it into the bottom and sides of the crib so that it can't be pulled out, then put your baby under it so that it only comes up to her chest.

Chances are she's plenty warm. If she was cold, she'd let you know by crying instead of sleeping. If you feel the back of her neck and it feels warm, she's fine. If you're really that concerned, get a few blanket sleepers - they're really warm.

You want to be careful you don't overheat her with your worrying - overheating is just as risky as having a loose blanket. Better to be on the cool side.

You can allow a blanket in the crib only if its tucked in really well, so that the baby cannot get it over the face. However most specialists in this area say no to blankets or other things in the crib with the baby due to suffocation and SIDS.

Don't worry though, if your baby is cold she will wake up and cry. If shes not crying shes comfortable.

The American Academy of Pediatrics usually recommends waiting until your child is 1 year old to put blankets in the crib. When you do, make sure the bottom and sides are tucked under the mattress so that the baby can't pull them out and get them wrapped around herself.

The safest time to put a blanket in the crib with a baby is when they are able to pull themselves up on the side of the crib. if they are just rolling around they could possibly roll themselves in the blanket.

May I suggest a Grobag. Go to www.grobag.com
It's like a sleeping bag they sleep in with no arms. I started my son in one at 2months and he's 5 months now. I swear by them. You never have to worry if they kicked the covers off or smother themselves with the blanket. They are a bit pricey, I paid $60.00 Canadian but it's the best baby investement I have purchased. I had to wash it last night so he couldn't use it and we had to use a blanket and I was so worried about him the whole night. Everytime I checked on him the covers were all off. If you get one, I suggest 2 for when the other is in the wash.

I would say about 14 months around there.......and theres always those grobags thingys and theyre helpful too....there like a blanket built into footy pajamas.....and to get her used to the blanket, you can have her sleep beside you for a couple of nights and watch her and see how she acts with a blanket on her. glad i could help and i`ll pray that everything goes ok.....thank you very much for the two points!! :-)

my son was sleeping with a blanket from day one. sometimes its not really comfortable just laying on thier back... they dont relax their bodies so they're kind of feeling unsafe. i cuddle blankets around my babies body so hes comfortable. he sleeps calmer and sound. and its not unsafe... unless your child is already pulling the blanket deep into its mouth to sophocate. plus, he/she'll let you know if they're too hot... and theres a simple solution to that, take a layer off his clothes or let him sleep in his diaper with a blanket...do what you feel comfortable doing because nobody knows your baby better than you. and all babies are VERY different.

I waited until my babies were able to grab the blanket and pull it away from their face. That way if it became covered at night, they were able to remove it from their faces. Before that, In the winter I always used an undershirt and the thick warm feetie pajamas.
