I would go for a 1998/99 Honda Civic. Not too old, it's cute, automatic or manual transmission, and very reliable.

OK reality check why buy a 12 year old car and not expect problems. Why buy a 8 year old car with 100,000 miles on it and expect to look good for that job promotion? My thinking you need a promotion of self esteem and good feeling. Please do not shoot low. You are worth a monthly car payment on a new car no one else has wrecked run low on oil or baby's have leaked onto. Trust me driving in front of the supermarket windows you will turn to look and "to your self see how great I look in this new 2007" There are a whole new crop of small on the outside big on features car to look at and buy new The Nissan Versa, Honda Fit. Toyota Yarus, Chevy Aveio, Suzuki. Scion Xa. All above between 12,000 And 17,000 financed for 7 years you will be driving new and in 5 years move up the food chain to bigger more powerful or fuel cell cars of the future. A eight year old car will get right where you are now in two years. A new car attitude is a good thing!
