im debating which one of these i should get. which one is better/

Between the two...I like GAIM better. It's a little more advanced than Trillian. I don't like that anyone can open up trillian and log onto my screen name.

I'm going to assume you're going to be using this in Windows, and that you mean Trillian Basic, the free version of Trillian.
I use Trillian personally, and I use it because it has tabbed browsing, skin support, better direct connection/file transfer support then GAIM, and it overall looks much more polished. Which is a problem with open source applications in my opinion, they all have really dumb names, and the user interface always looks cheap and unfriendly. I'd go with Trillian because its clean, simple, and won't cost you any money if you go with Basic. The Pro version has its advantages such as dock-hiding, and some better configuration options. I dislike GAIM because it lacks the interface like Trillian, and it looks cheap.

Neither. I gave up using anything connected with IMs. too many problems. If you want to talk to me just EMAIL Me or better yet CALL ME. If you have my phone number that is.
