It seems to me that I have very good advice for other people but I don't seem to be able to apply those skills to my own life. Why is this?

because when giving advice, you don't really have to worry about the consequences, which allows you to think a bit quicker. Perhaps in stressful situations you also can't think clearly.

Its been a proven fact of all humanity. There was a quote off of Google the other day that said something like: "When all is said and done, there is more said than done."

When you give someone advice, you rarely feel the emotional tangle that they're going through, the reason they need advice in the first place. Although you might be able to see the logical and reasonable benefits of your own advice, its hard sometimes to overcome emotional and psychological barriers in order to carry it through.

Everyone honestly knows the right decision. The reason they do not make the right decision is becuase it is often a very hard choice. People who offer advice are not really offering a new decision, they are simply reinforcing a persons belief in the right choice. The reason it is easier for us to give advice then to advise ourselves is becuase we realize the truth, that everyone only wants to hear what they already chose to do as recognition that it is the correct choice.

The reason it is hard for us to take our own advice is becuase we do not have a validating second opinion.

Hails to the truth,
Silence

Well for one, it's easier to toss out advice to others because your on the outside. The same way that its easier for someone to give you advice. Some people try to succeed their own troubles by assisting others. For the better part its an attempt to forget about their troubles, as helping someone else implys that they do not have a problem -- or they do and opt to forget about it as best they can.

You cannot give people advice because you have not lived their life. It only seems like good advice to you because it's what you imagine you would if you were in their situation. So naturally it seems like really good advice.

Like everyone else, you have a load of cognitive biases which you are probably not aware of. For example, people have a tendency to believe in themselves more than in others. Also, people get emotional about their own situation, which clouds their judgment

Because with other people you can be objective and see the situation clearly, since you are not involved in it.. But with yourself you're feeling all kinds of emotions and they will obscure your ability to see things clearly. If you hold your hand up in front of your face all you're going to see is your hand (= emotions and feelings). But if you take your hand away, then you can see the whole picture,

I think that you are able to see the problem clearer when someone else is going thru something. but yet putting yourself into the situation, and then thinking what you would do, as you are thinking more clearly. ellie

because when its your situation sometimes the bad choice may be what you want but its not right for you and when its not your situation you don't have the same feelings as that person and you don't have temptation in the way because its not gonna affect you if its not your problem....i dunno if that makes any sense

Selective interpretation. Most people only hear and see what they want.
