Refrain from using anything (coffee, Colas, chocolate) that has caffine in it. Try to put the days troubles out of your mind. Take a long, hot shower or bath just before retiring. Find a comfortable position and try not to toss back and forth. Reduce the noise level if you can. It may be trite and shop-worn to say this but, "relax".
There are also devices called white noise generators that can be set to a low volume and sound like a waterfall, rain, or the ocean that has proved beneficial to some people in getting to sleep.
Best of luck.

Dont eat too close to bedtime. No caffine after dinner. No smoking before bed. Try things like lighting a candle and listening to soothing music in a darkened room. Routines also help. Here is a BIG no no. DO NOT have a tv in your bedroom. Your bedroom should only be for 2 things...sleep and sex. Try keeping a sleep diary also. That way on nights when you have a good night sleep you can go back and see what you did differently. Clean sheets and fresh pj's also help. Lavender is also a soothing scent. Dont know if you are single or involved, but sex also help to relieve tension which can help induce a good nights sleep. Hope some of this helps.

The first thing my doctor recommended was Benadryl(the allergy pill) because as an antihistamine it tends to cause drowsiness(that's also what is in Tylenol PM). Then I tried sublingual melatonin, but that didn't work too well. I also tried Valerian Root, which works but smells and tastes bad(even just swallowing the capsule).
As for home remedies, try relaxing before bed. Only use your bedroom for sleep and sex. Don't read in bed; read in a chair or in the living room. If after about 30 minutes you haven't fallen asleep, get up and leave the bedroom. Read something for a while and then try again. Something that helps me is, when you wake up early, don't check and see what time it is. It just adds to the stress of not being asleep.
Sweet dreams!

exercise for about 15 to 20 minutes before lying down so your body will really relax when you go to bed.
Then read for a little while.
It really works for me. I don't really know any home remedies to make you sleepy. Maybe a shot of brandy or something.
My mom always drank warm milk (yuck)
But she swore by it.
But, I must admit that when I have insomnia really bad I take an ambien. My doctor prescribed them to me a while back.
He gives me 10 mg. but I break them in half and take 5 mg.
(then they last me twice as long)
They work GREAT, I sleep all night and I usually don't remember dreaming anything. I only take them about 3 or 4 nights out of the month. I highly recomend them.

Try a few gentle stretching exercises to relax your muscles, then a cup of tea, a good book, and some soothing music for half an hour or more before you go to bed. Also, try to set a regular sleep schedule so your body will actually cooperate.
Make sure your room is not too hot or too cold: Those will interfere with sleeping. And if your mattress is old and starting to break down, get a new one. Those will help tremendously!
Good luck!

melatonin. I think you can get it anywhere. I take half a 3mg. tablet and I'm usually asleep in less than half an hour.

Tylenol PM or plain Benadryl will induce sleepiness and can be purchased at any drugstore.
