To prevent them from hurting him/herself, or others? Say for example, your spouse is very inebriated, and insists on going somewhere (driving). You try to take the car keys, and he/she becomes belligerant which forces you to become physical to keep him/her from driving drunk and potentially killing him/herself and other people.

There is no way on Gods earth can physical or mental abuse to a mate be justified just as there is no reason today why one has to put up with it either. There just is no legal way unless it falls somehow under self protection and still violence is no justification for any reason

Violence to anyone can't be justified, people need to keep there hand to themselves.

I was taught not to hit a man unless I was willing to get hit back. Actually that was taught just in general. If you going to hit someone get ready to get it returned. So maybe in self defense i would justify it.

It can't. There is absolutely no excuse for hitting your spouse, even and especially in anger. I don't even spank my kids.
