Good question friend
However, Corporations have always been tied with war and Empire. The first, and some would say mightiest, of Corporations to have ever existed was the British East India Company.
A good friend of history, it was their Tea that led to the Boston Party, and after losing the American colony, It turned its attention to India.
Their, they we're given a full army, reigonal powers and a mandate to occupy India for the Good of Queen and country.
Empires are born of greed and power, and a circle of dependance. Look at my country, Britain. Our empire was the worlds largest, yet we relied on it a great deal for our survival.

Empire, as used for states, has meant an entity that is composed of various smaller states, ruled by an Emperor/Emperess. Each smaller state retains some semblance of its individuality, although that often fades over time.
The only one left I can think of is Japan, and its consolidation goes back quite a while.
Two which faded from the scene fairly recently were Iran and Ethiopia. The ruler of Iran was called the Shahan Shah, and the ruler of Ethiopia was called Negus Negusti. Both these terms roughly translate as King of Kings.

Japan, has an Emperor, and still has Imperial succession. I'm not sure if there are any others who may qualify; though, Japan is now a republic, with a symbolic Imperial Throne... Their corporate powers are near imperial... Hmm... Good thought provocation... Kudos!
And, though some may try to argue that America is trying to get one going, I'm not quite sure that "empire" would be quite the correct term. It's more like a hegemony, I suppose. Not sure.

You could say both and though financial empires do exist today, political empires like: Colonies own by the British, Spain and many other European countries are practically all gone independent. The British do not call their colonies colony anymore, they are know as: Dependent overseas Territories.

The Americans seem to be trying to gain one.
And I apologize.
The British empire is a lot smaller than it once was, but it is still there.
