The discovery of gold in California was what started the large scale westward migration leading eventually to the development of the pony express, the transcontinental railroad and eventually California's agriculture and magnificent wine industry. It brought people from all over the world to California including from China. It was the first time in the history of the world that Easterners and Westerners met in large enough numbers to influence each others' cultures. And of course people from all over the world brought all their differences with them. With the development of hydraulic mining and dredger mining, the gold rush led to the need for environmental protection legislation. It led to efforts to exclude various racial and ethnic groups. It led to great debates over whether or not slaves gave an unfair advantage to their owners and for that reason should be outlawed. It led to the near complete genocide of the California Native Americans. In fact there probably isn't a conflict you can think of that wasn't exacerbated by the presence of gold.
