I'm interested in being a probation officer ... can you tell me how you got there and what it took. Are you satisfied with your pay. And do you have any advice for me?

I'm a juvenile probation officer. You need to have a bachelor's degree before you can be licensed, and will also have to pass an exam. You can't take the exam before being hired as a probation officer, however.

Your degree doesn't have to be in criminal justice, but it does help. I have a MS in education, and have experience working with youth, so I was able to be hired even though my degree isn't in criminal justice. The starting pay in Indiana for a probation officer is just over $27,000.

I love my job. I meet at least once monthly with my clients. I go to court for their preliminary, fact-finding and dispositional hearings. I have a lot of roles as a probation officer. I'm a cheerleader, a parent, a principal, a debt collector, a warden, an investigator, and a counselor to these kids and to their parents.

Good luck!
