To hear myself think.

Well, science can answer that. Its a fact that the average human brain can only process about 7-10 bits of information at a time. The music is very distracting and takes up some of those bits. So therefore, you turn the radio down so you can think better.

Depends on the music. Such things like rap with all the directions like waving hands in the air and moving like you just don't care can be confusing and frustrating, much like a back seat driver squaking orders. Classical music makes you think your in the elevator and kind zone out looking at numbers. I suggest you change the station when looking for an address. I like tuning to the theme song station and cranking up the volume. I have had 100% success rate on finding address since my switch. I dare you to tell me how you can't find a place with the Mission Impossible theme song on the radio.

It is something we do just because of habit. We lower the TV when someone calls or someone talks to you because it is much easier to hear and concentrate on what they are saying. So your brain automatically does it for other things as well. You know can drive perfectly well when listening to your radio and that you can work or type away on your computer while listening to music as I am right now but when you feel you really need to concentrate on something your mind automatically tells you to block all distractions.

To better concentrate on the road. If there's music or whatever in the background, you'll have more trouble focusing on the directions. Some people don't though. I don't. Because I don't drive yet. But some people are better multi taskers than others.

Your brain can multi-task but when you need to really concentrate you need to focus on one thing only; and the background noise may catch your attention diverting it away from the problem at hand. That is why talking on your cell phone and driving, or sex and driving are prohibited. Dont drink and drive... you will spill it!

The reason you turn down the radio is so that there is no noise to clutter your brain so you are clearheaded and can pay close attention to figure out where your headed.

To concentrate,

Have you noticed that drivers talking on a mobile phone when driving can`t concentrate either. The way they drive says it all.
Ask a policeman.
